From Vision to Platform

Designing and Building the Pricing Intelligence Platform That Commercialized Senex Global’s Market Expertise

ENGAGEMENT AT A GLANCE

Client

Senex Global — a market intelligence and analytics firm serving manufacturers, distributors, and retailers across the construction materials sector

Challenge

Senex possessed deep domain expertise in pricing intelligence but lacked the technical infrastructure to package that expertise into a scalable, commercially viable platform

Approach

Always Curious designed and built a three-phase Pricing Intelligence Platform (PIP)—encompassing data ingestion, analytical querying, and multi-tenant account management—to transform Senex’s consulting knowledge into a subscription-ready SaaS product

Key Results

Fully operational SaaS platform delivered • Time-to-insight reduced from days to seconds • Multi-tenant architecture supporting commercial client onboarding • Defensible product positioning in the construction materials sector

INDUSTRY CONTEXT

Pricing intelligence in the construction materials sector has historically been a manual, relationship-driven discipline. Manufacturers and distributors rely on a patchwork of spreadsheets, periodic reports, and institutional knowledge to understand how their products are priced relative to competitors and across distribution channels.

This creates a structural information asymmetry. Organizations with larger analytical teams or longer market tenure hold disproportionate advantage—not because their data is better, but because they have the capacity to process it. Smaller players and new market entrants are left navigating pricing decisions with incomplete visibility.

The opportunity that Senex Global identified was to democratize access to this intelligence. By building a platform capable of aggregating, normalizing, and delivering pricing data at scale, Senex could transform a consulting-dependent service into a self-serve analytical tool—fundamentally changing how the industry accesses pricing insight.

THE CHALLENGE

Senex Global’s founding team brought years of hands-on pricing consulting experience to the construction materials industry. They understood the data, the market dynamics, and the questions their clients needed answered. What they lacked was the technical infrastructure to deliver that intelligence at scale.

The gap between expertise and product was significant:

  • No scalable delivery mechanism: Pricing insights were generated through manual analysis and delivered via spreadsheets and presentations—a model that could not support a growing client base without proportional headcount increases.
  • No standardized data architecture: Market data existed in disparate formats across multiple sources with no unified schema, making repeatable analysis difficult and time-consuming.
  • No self-serve analytical capability: Clients depended entirely on Senex’s team to generate insights, creating bottlenecks that limited both responsiveness and revenue potential.
  • No commercial infrastructure: There was no mechanism for managing multiple clients, controlling data access, or supporting a subscription-based commercial model.

In short, Senex had the domain expertise and the market thesis—but converting that into a defensible, scalable technology product required a fundamentally different set of capabilities.

OUR APPROACH

Strategic Framing

Always Curious began the engagement by reframing the problem. The challenge was not simply to build a tool that replicated what Senex’s consultants did manually. It was to design a platform architecture that could codify domain expertise into a product—one capable of ingesting heterogeneous data, exposing it through flexible analytical interfaces, and delivering it within a commercial model that scales independently of headcount.

The guiding principle was clear: build infrastructure that transforms consulting knowledge into product value.

This framing shaped every subsequent design decision—from data model design through API architecture to the client portal’s permission structure.

Three-Phase Platform Design

The platform was designed and delivered across three integrated phases, each building on the capabilities established by the prior phase.

“The team at Always Curious helped us deliver a successful online tool that provided timely visibility into changes in retail prices. Their vision, commitment, and follow-through helped us deliver our product to the market where previous suppliers could not.”

THE TRANSFORMATION

Phase 1: Data Ingestion and Normalization

Always Curious worked closely with Senex to identify the highest-impact product categories and geographic regions for initial platform coverage. Rather than attempting to ingest everything at once, the team prioritized segments where pricing intelligence would deliver the most immediate value to prospective clients.

A structured data importer was then engineered to handle the operational realities of construction materials pricing data—disparate source formats, inconsistent attribute naming, and varying levels of granularity. The importer normalizes incoming records against a standardized product schema, filtering and mapping attributes to ensure that every record entering the platform conforms to a consistent analytical structure.

This disciplined approach to ingestion meant that downstream analytics could operate on predictable, high-quality data from day one—eliminating the reconciliation overhead that had previously consumed significant analyst time.

Phase 2: Analytical Query Engine

The analytical layer was designed to surface the specific insights that Senex’s consultants had historically delivered manually—but to do so on demand, at scale, and without analyst intervention.

The engine provides a facet-driven API that supports:

  • Time-series analysis: Historical pricing trends across configurable date ranges, enabling clients to identify pricing movements, seasonal patterns, and competitive shifts.
  • Multi-dimensional segmentation: Filtering by distributor, product category, subcategory, and geographic region to isolate the specific market segments most relevant to each client’s competitive position.
  • Attribute-level drill-down: Granular analysis by product-specific attributes—material, finish, configuration, and other feature-level dimensions—enabling insight at a depth previously available only through custom consulting engagements.
  • Dynamic visualization and export: Automated chart generation from filtered datasets with export capabilities for executive presentations, client reporting, and internal analysis.

The result is an analytical engine that transforms what was previously a days-long consulting deliverable into a self-serve interaction completed in seconds.

Phase 3: Client Portal and Commercial Infrastructure

The final phase established the infrastructure required to operate PIP as a commercial product. A multi-tenant client portal was designed with a focus on three core requirements: client customization, data protection, and subscription management.

  • Client-specific data views: Each client account is configured to access only the product categories, regions, and time periods relevant to their subscription tier—ensuring that Senex’s proprietary data assets are protected while delivering tailored value.
  • Role-based access controls: Administrative, analyst, and viewer roles provide appropriate levels of platform access, supporting both internal Senex operations and external client usage.
  • Subscription management: Built-in controls for client onboarding, tier configuration, and usage tracking provide the operational backbone for a SaaS commercial model.

This phase transformed PIP from an internal analytical tool into a market-facing product—one with the access controls, commercial infrastructure, and client experience required to support a growing subscriber base.users, we identified the specific product attributes and market signals most valuable to analysts and decision-makers—ensuring that collection efforts were driven by business requirements, not data availability.

Custom sourcing routines were then engineered to collect data directly from authoritative sources, ensuring consistency across each collection cycle. This approach produced higher-quality data, significantly improved repeatability, and eliminated dependency on third-party providers whose quality Senex could not control.

LOOKING AHEAD

With the Pricing Intelligence Platform operational, Senex is now positioned to pursue growth on multiple fronts. The architecture was designed with extensibility as a core principle—enabling the company to expand product coverage into adjacent construction material categories, introduce new analytical capabilities, and scale the client base without proportional increases in operational overhead.

The platform also creates a strategic flywheel: as more data is ingested and more clients interact with the system, the intelligence it delivers becomes richer and more differentiated. Each new product category, each new pricing signal, and each new client query adds to a compounding data asset that strengthens Senex’s competitive position over time.

What began as a founder’s vision grounded in years of pricing consulting expertise is now a scalable technology product—one capable of delivering institutional-grade market intelligence to an industry that has long operated without it.
