From Bottlenecks to Breakthroughs

Elevating NRHC Website Performance through Precise Diagnostics and Root Causes Fixes

ENGAGEMENT AT A GLANCE

Client

National Road Heritage Corridor (NRHC) — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting economic and cultural development in southwestern Pennsylvania

Challenge

Website performance had degraded to the point of compromising core functionality, with page loads exceeding 5 seconds and no clear understanding of root causes

Approach

Conducted a comprehensive infrastructure audit to identify underlying issues, then executed targeted fixes to DNS, hosting, and WordPress configuration

Key Results

53% performance increase (Sub-second page loads, 32% LCP improvement)

INDUSTRY CONTEXT

Nonprofit organizations serving regional communities rely on their websites as critical infrastructure. National Road Heritage Corridor, a 501(c)(3) driving economic and cultural development across southwestern Pennsylvania, relies on its digital presence to maintain its core functionality: serving tourists, community members, local businesses, and cultural organizations seeking to engage with the region

This functionality was undermined by infrastructure challenges, turning a critical digital asset into a liability. Page performance issues degraded user experience, affecting NRHC’s functionality as an accessible community representative. When the incumbent hosting provider suggested expensive upgrades without clarity on root causes, NRHC faced a choice: continue investing in a fundamentally broken system, or take a step back to diagnose what had actually gone wrong.

THE CHALLENGE

NRHC understood that its website was slow, but had no clear understanding of why. The symptoms were clear:

  • Excessive Page Load Times: Over 5 seconds on average.
  • Poor Communication: The incumbent hosting provider was slow and unresponsive, with email inquiries going unanswered for weeks.
  • Price Escalation: The hosting provider offered only expensive upgrades with no explanation of underlying issues.
  • Root Cause Obscurity: No clear understanding of whether poor performance stemmed from complex site architecture, poor configuration, or fundamental infrastructure problems.

The organization needed to understand what was actually wrong with it’s infrastructure so it could make informed decisions about the investment required to fix it and position the site for future growth.

OUR APPROACH

Strategic Diagnosis

Our strategy began with a comprehensive diagnosis aimed at collaborative identification of specific targets for performance improvement.. We conducted a detailed infrastructure audit to identify the actual root causes of poor performance, then executed targeted fixes based on what we found.

THE TRANSFORMATION

Phase 1: Comprehensive Infrastructure Audit

We conducted a detailed audit of NRHC’s entire infrastructure stack to understand where performance was being constrained. The assessment examined three critical layers: DNS configuration, hosting architecture, and WordPress implementation.

The findings were specific and actionable. We identified that NRHC’s DNS was not optimized for reliable, fast resolution. The hosting environment lacked proper caching and query optimization, leading to unnecessary database strain. The WordPress installation contained unnecessary plugins and inefficient configurations that were consuming resources without providing value.

Critically, none of these were complex architectural problems requiring major redesign. They were configuration and infrastructure issues—the kind that could be fixed with targeted, cost-efficient changes. We documented our findings in a detailed assessment that clearly outlined the root causes and provided a roadmap for improvement.

Phase 2: Executing Infrastructure Improvements

With the audit complete, we executed targeted improvements across three fronts:

  • DNS Migration: We transferred DNS management to Cloudflare, an industry-standard provider that combines reliability, threat protection, and performance optimization. This change alone improved resolution speed and provided a foundation for global content delivery.
  • Hosting Migration:  We moved NRHC from its underperforming host to Always Curious’s purpose-built WordPress hosting infrastructure. Our platform is optimized specifically for WordPress performance, featuring dedicated caching strategies, query optimization, and the ability to scale efficiently under traffic spikes without incurring additional costs.
  • WordPress Optimization: We audited the WordPress installation, removing unnecessary plugins that were consuming resources without providing value, and upgrading others to more efficient, best-in-breed alternatives. We also replatformed the WordPress theme to a modern, performant implementation—a significant undertaking that eliminated rendering bottlenecks and directly contributed to the dramatic performance improvements reflected in the final metrics. These changes—plugin refinement combined with theme replatforming—streamlined the site’s operational footprint and removed the architectural constraints that had previously limited performance.

Each change was incremental and specific—addressing a clearly identified problem rather than attempting broad system overhauls. This targeted approach kept costs down while maximizing impact.

PHASE 1

Infrastructure Audit

A detailed infrastructure audit revealed clear, fixable causes behind NRHC’s performance issues.

PHASE 2

Infrastructure Improvements

We executed targeted improvements across DNS, hosting, and WordPress to eliminate every bottleneck the audit uncovered.

RESULTS

The combination of infrastructure diagnosis and targeted fixes produced measurable, significant improvements across all performance dimensions..

LOOKING AHEAD

This engagement demonstrates the value of diagnostic thinking. When a system underperforms,  the instinct is often to spend more money—upgrade hosting, add resources, buy new tools. But performance problems usually aren’t solved by spending more; they’re solved by understanding what’s actually wrong.

NRHC was being offered expensive upgrades that wouldn’t have addressed the actual problems. By stepping back to conduct a comprehensive audit, we identified that the issues were rooted in configuration and infrastructure choices—not architectural limitations or fundamental design flaws. Fixing these required precision, not expense.

This primary diagnosis facilitated efficient, impactful results : a 53% improvement in performance, page loads reduced from 5+ seconds to sub-second, and a cost-efficient migration to better infrastructure. Most importantly, NRHC now has a platform that is responsive, reliable, and positioned for growth. With this foundation in place, the organization can now trust their digital infrastructure as a reliable tool that powers their core functionality: serving and investing in their community.

ABOUT ALWAYS CURIOUS

Always Curious is a technology consultancy with experience in diagnosing and fixing performance and infrastructure problems for organizations whose websites have become sources of friction rather than value.

Whether dealing with slow page loads, infrastructure inefficiency, rising hosting costs, or vendor relationships that aren’t delivering answers, we start with comprehensive diagnosis. We identify root causes, not just symptoms. We recommend targeted fixes, not expensive upgrades. We focus on understanding what’s actually wrong so that solutions can be efficient, cost-effective, and built to scale.
